Why use litz wire in high frequency transformers?

High-frequency transformers are commonly used in new energy and industrial power conversion equipment. Standard solid copper wire loses a lot of power at high frequencies and hurts overall efficiency, which is why we use litz wire to improve transformer performance.
These power losses are mainly caused by skin effect and proximity effect. Under high-frequency working conditions, current only flows along the wire surface rather than evenly throughout the conductor. This lowers the effective conductive area, increases AC resistance, and creates extra heat and power loss.
The proximity effect makes this problem even worse. Densely packed transformer coils create mutual magnetic interference and mess up current distribution. At 100kHz, solid copper windings produce noticeable extra loss, resulting in overheating, poor efficiency and shorter transformer lifespan.
Litz wire fixes these issues very well. It is composed of many thin, individually insulated copper strands twisted tightly together. Every single strand is thinner than the high-frequency skin depth, allowing current to flow evenly and making full use of the conductor.
This special twisted structure greatly reduces the proximity effect by balancing the magnetic field on each strand. In actual application, it can lower the transformer’s AC resistance by around 60%, achieving much more stable and low-loss high-frequency conduction.

Besides better energy efficiency, litz wire also makes transformers more stable and durable. Less heat generation reduces thermal pressure on insulation and core components. It also allows smaller winding sizes, which works perfectly for high-density equipment such as EV power systems and wireless charging devices.
As modern equipment keeps moving towards higher operating frequency and smaller size, traditional solid wire can no longer satisfy technical requirements. Litz wire has become a must for high-frequency transformer manufacturing.
