What Exactly is a Guitar Pickup?

Pickups are electronic devices that are composed of magnets and wires, and the magnets essentially pick up the vibrations from the strings of electric guitar. The vibrations that are picked up through insulated copper wire coils and magnets are transferred to the amplifier, which is what you hear when you play a note on an electric guitar using a guitar amplifier.
As you can see, the choice of winding is very important in making the guitar pickup you want. Different enameled wires have important effects on producing different sounds.

Coating of pickup winding wire:
Poly coating is commonly used in modern pickups mostly because of its high consistancy.
Enamel coating is a traditional coating used in Humbucker en Fender pickups. This wire creates a more raw sound.
Heavy Formvar coating is a vintage style coating that was used frequently in pickups made in the 50’s and 60’s.

Thickness of the copper wire:
AWG 42 is 0.063mm thick and commonly used for Humbuckers, Strat en Tele bridge pickups.

Use

The amount of wire used depends in the number of windings, the thickness of the wire and the coating.
250g is in general sufficient for 2 to 3 humbuckers or 5 to 6 single coils.
500g should be sufficient for 4 to 6 humbuckers and 10 to 12 single coils.

The insulation is basically a coating that is wrapped around the copper wire, so the wire doesn’t short itself out. Variations in insulation materials have a huge effect on a pickup’s sound.

We mainly manufacture Plain Enamel, Formvar insulation poly insulation wire, for the simple reason that they just sound best to our ears.

The thickness of the wire is usually measured in AWG, which stands for American Wire Gauge. In guitar pickups, 42 AWG is the one that’s most commonly used. But wire-types measuring from 41 to 44 AWG are all being used in the construction of guitar pickups.
