Solderability Comparison: Polyurethane vs. Polyesterimide Coatings in Magnet Wire Applications

In the competitive magnet wire industry, coating selection directly impacts manufacturing efficiency, production costs, and end-product reliability. Polyurethane and polyesterimide enamels represent two distinct approaches to balancing solderability with thermal performance, and understanding their differences is essential for manufacturers seeking optimal results.

Polyurethane coatings are preferred for their direct solderability, which means they do not need to be stripped before connection. This benefit greatly decreases the amount of time and labor required in high-volume production environments. Recent innovations have improved this feature. A polyurethane enamel modified with polyesterimide resin and blocked isocyanates offers improved solderability at lower temperatures than traditional Class F solderable polyesterimides, with enhanced heat shock resistance and lower baking temperatures in wire production. But formulators need to be cautious when optimizing isocyanate to hydroxyl ratios, as this can compromise thermal resistance, and improper ratios can cause performance degradation over extended periods of thermal stress.

Polyesterimide coatings are instead designed for high heat performance, meeting Class H requirements electric vehicle (EV) traction motors, high voltage transformers, and more. Although standard polyesterimides can be more difficult to solder, recent patenting activity involves modified formulations that enhance this property. Combined systems like polyesterimide – aramid resin systems also indicate that manufacturers are still looking for coatings that balance heat resistance with ease of processing. This invention is a response to increasing market demands in the area of providing materials which do not involve compromises in the thermal capability and the manufacturing easiness.
